Snow Leopards: Health and Management

Snow leopards (Uncia uncia), large cats native to Asia, are recognised as an endangered species with a declining population (IUCN Red List data). They are threatened by hunting for their fur. It is important that snow leopards in zoos are displayed in enclosures which are appropriate for their behavioural needs and are educational for visitors. Exhibit design, husbandry, and veterinary care should all be informed by natural history, previous captive management information, and available disease and veterinary information - all of which are included in Wildpro "Snow Leopards: Health and Management."

This information resource on snow leopards has been funded as part of the development of Twycross Zoo's Himalaya, in order to ensure that this new enclosure, and the ongoing husbandry of snow leopards at Twycross Zoo, are of the highest standard, meeting the behavioural and husbandry needs of these endangered cats.
